63rd Drink

Apparently it is against City Building Code to have missiles of any sort in your building, even if they're used in defense of the City. Also, violating that code caries a very, very heavy fine.

So, if you thought about equipping your apartment or storefront with any, you might be aware of the fine.

I think I need to go to the deity office and read up on any other Building Codes I might inadvertently be violating.

Tony sighed.

"I think that might be a bit hopeful," he told her. "I would just settle for them seeing me as a slightly good man."

"Give it time." Romana laced her fingers behind his neck and relaxed in his arms, really comfortable for the fist time that day.

"What would you like to do, since we're obviously not getting much done here." She nodded toward Tony's desk which looked much like her lab, all parchment and inks without a decent piece of equipment anywhere.

"Something distracting. There's a festival I hear, the gardens..."

Tony pressed against Romana and enjoyed the feeling of her fingers on his neck. Anywhere her skin came in contact with his he felt a pleasant heat.

"A festival sounds like a great idea," he said, smiling at her. "I'd love to go."

Smiling back was easy, after the last few weeks Romana felt as if a weight had been lifted off her shoulders.

"Then it's settled. No more trying to work, a nice day, and a quiet evening."

"Alright, no more trying to work," he said. "No more talking on the network or anything like that. Just you and I spending time together at the festival."

Romana took a step out of Tony's arms, drawing her hands down his arms until she reached his fingertips. Grasping them lightly she took a few steps back drawing him along with her.

"And the nice thing about the lack of electricity today, it means we can have a relaxing candle-lit dinner afterwords."

She might not be able to help him with the people from his world, but she could at least distract him.

Tony gripped her fingertips with his own and followed after her. She was right, there wasn't really really much he could do here at the moment. Not only that, spending an evening out with Romana was a very inviting proposition.

"I think a candle-lit dinner sounds fantastic," he told her, quickening his step so that he could give her a quick kiss.

Romana would have taken a step closer so she could prolong the kiss, unfortunately, her feet had other ideas and tangled themselves in the hem of her garment, causing her to trip again.

Laughing, Tony caught her before she could fall too far over and pulled her closer to him.

"Want me to pretend you did that on purpose to get closer?" he asked, grinning at her.

Romana laughed, "If only. Hold on a moment."

Holding onto Tony for balance she reached down and removed her shoes. "We'll try this barefoot today." That was much better.

She rose on her toes a bit and gave Tony a kiss. "Besides, I don't need excuses to get close to you."

Tony waited until she had her shoes off before he started walking again. It was good to be with her, in more ways than one.

"No, no you don't," he said, squeezing her hand. "You can get as close as you'd like."

Romana entwined her arm in his as they walked. "I never though I'd get this close to someone, it wasn't anything I ever really thought about."

She remembered her conversation with Rain and hesitantly continued, "You know how much you mean to me, don't you?" If there was one thing the last few chaotic weeks had taught her, it was how much she'd come to trust and depend on the man at her side.

"Well I'm glad you chose me," he said, glancing over at her with a warm smile. He really was glad that she had, she was an amazing woman and he felt... honored by being so close to her.

"And I do know," he reassured her.

"I'm glad, with everything that's happened...well, it just put a few things in perspective for me."

"Like what?" Tony ventured. He knew that neither of them were all that great at expressing their feelings but Tony very much wanted to know how she was doing.

Romana took a moment, trying to find the right words for what she wanted to say.

"The last few weeks, the way I was, there were...any number of things that I could have fixated on or obsessed about. Fear, for example, pain, confusion. But it was...loss that hurt me the most. The idea of losing you, specifically. And while I knew I cared for you, I didn't realize until then that I, well," her voice dropped to almost a whisper, "that I love you."

And there it was. That little four letter word. Tony had suspected it might be coming for some time now, little hints about how she said she loved things about him, how worried she was this last week... and he had asked her to expound on what she had meant.

"Well I'm glad you realized that," Tony said, stopping and tilting her face up to his. He knew how to answer, he knew the only way he could answer, was with the truth. There was only way to describe how he felt. "Because I love you too."

After Romana had finished speaking she felt Tony slow and stop. For one agonizing moment, she felt she had said something wrong, something inappropriate, but when his hand touched her face, she knew better. Looking into his eyes, she saw the truth of what he said, he loved her. Rain had been right and the last bit of worry drained away.

All of that said, Romana did the only thing she could think of, she kissed him. City streets be damned.

The kiss caught Tony slightly by surprise, as Romana was usually much more reserved than this in public. He liked it when she wasn't though and he thought this was a very appropriate time for her to be publicly affectionate. She never ceased to amaze him.

Romana could feel herself blushing as the kiss ended, but she inwardly smirked a little at Tony's surprise. She rather liked being able to do that to him on occasion.

"You're cute when you blush, you know that?" Tony said, leaning forward to kiss her softly again. "But I like it. It makes me want to put your hair in pig tails and dress you up in a school girl uniform."

Romana sighed at the kiss but blinked, confused at the second comment. "Why would you want to see something like that?"

Tony gave a chuckle at that. Sometimes her innocence was refreshing. Well, her innocence in some things, her experience was also nice.

"Romana, there is so much you have to learn about humans."

Romana may not have known exactly what he was referencing, but she knew that look on his face and as such she felt her blush deepen a bit and she cleared her throat. "Really, Tony."

If she could suppress the urge to laugh, she might just look a bit disapproving.
